On the Internet for a long time, I have seen hundreds of people whine about the unrealistic Beauty Standards pop culture has set. But no one has ever factored in the influence of mob mentality in setting such standards. For those who don’t know, Mob mentality, also called herd or hive mentality is the inclination that some humans have to be part of a larger group, often neglecting their individual feelings in the process, and adopting the behaviors and actions of the people around them. This mentality is what drives an alarmingly large part of our society being backed by praise and cancel culture. Through this mentality, this generation has been aided to glorify celebrities and eventually blame them for actions they did not force anyone to partake in. Beauty standards are a set of values applied to the appearance of both men and women to be regarded as beautiful and handsome in order to rightly fit in the community. These standards are concerned with people’s skin, hair, clothing, and other parts of the body. These standards are also constantly changing and because certain individuals have been put on a higher pedestal than others, these individuals have the influence to determine what these standards are, how long they last, what they change to and how fast they change.
The fact that they have this power isn’t their fault at all, its society’s fault as we have allowed herd mentality to become so rampant that we no longer have the privilege as individuals to decide what we want to look like or what we consider beautiful. We have given this up for the sake of the lager group or herd and refuse to even take accountability for it. Instead we blame the celebrities for showing or voicing out what THEY consider beautiful even though they never forced their standards on us.
