END SARS 2020

What major historical events do you remember?

The protests in Nigeria turned not so peaceful in a matter of days. The End Sars protest in Nigeria was a massive movement in October 2020 against police brutality in Nigeria. It ended devastatingky with the very thing that spurred the protest.

I was in Seniour Secondary School 3 at the time writing my final exams and was restricted from even participating in the protests. It all climaxed on the day of my Chem finals when our exams had to be canceled due to an escalation of the protest. The Protesters had begun blocking off some roads and even vandalising public property. I; who usually followed the school bus then had to take my younger siblings and walk 10 kilometers home because our school bus was unable to function and the roads were blocked so our parents couldn’t come to pick us up.

I remember passing through the familiar streets and being horrified and afraid at the state of things. There was graffiti, broken glass and Protesters with weapons lining the streets. I remember making comments about how this wasnt going to turn out positively.

I eventually made it home and went to bed; only to wake up the next morning to the news of the police taking shots at protesters  killing 103 people.

Heartbreaking!
